Trembling with terror, Polina retreated into the corner. She waited for the attack, but the gorilla… just sat there, watching the wall of rain. It was then she realized: a violent tropical storm had broken out outside.
The gorilla hadn’t kidnapped her. It was protecting her. The beast had moved the injured tourist to a dry shelter and was now guarding the entrance against predators that hunt during the storm.

Polina made a desperate move. She pulled out the remaining food from her backpack—simple crackers—and offered them to her “jailer.” The gorilla took the snack with surprising gentleness and began to crunch, the tension finally breaking.
As the giant creature chewed, its aggressive posture softened, and for the first time, Polina saw a glimmer of sorrow rather than rage in its deep-set eyes. The gorilla then reached into the shadows of the cave and pulled out a small, shivering bundle—an orphaned infant gorilla, weak and clearly malnourished.
It became chillingly clear that the silverback hadn’t kidnapped her for food, but as a desperate last resort to find a “mother” for the dying baby. When Polina reached out to touch the infant, she noticed the silverback was also bleeding from a deep snare wound on its leg, likely left by the same poachers who had devastated its family.

She realized with a jolt of terror that they weren’t just trapped in a cave; they were all hiding from a group of armed men whose voices were now echoing through the trees outside.
